When people think chiropractic, 9 times out of 10, they think of popping backs. Don't get me wrong, that is sure a lot of what we do! But in our opinion, a lot of conditions can't be healed by chiropractic alone.
Chiropractic adjustments are great for restoring motion into joints. We adjust spinal joints, like your cervical and thoracic spinal joints, extremity joints, like ankles and shoulders, as well as ribs, hips, and just about all joints in the body. Adjustments work by 'resetting' the joint. We are putting motion into a joint that is not moving well. This can help reduce inflammation, take pressures off the nervous system, reduce pain, improve motion, and loooots more.
But, sometimes the joint isn't the cause of the problem. Sometimes other parts of the body, like muscles, tendons, or ligaments, can be the source of the problem. Your muscles + ligaments + tendons + joints all work together. If one is off, likely the rest are too. That is why, even when you come in for a muscle complaint, we adjust the areas around it, too.
In our opinion, we would be doing you a disservice if we only treated the joints. We believe that the best way to heal is to treat all of the areas around the pain, including the muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
So, what does this look like? Here at Woodland Chirorpactic, we use a combination of Chirorpactic Adjustments AND Physiotherapy. As a student, we had hundreds of hours of hands-on learning with physiotherapy. We even had our own separate boards over physiotherapy we were required to take.
What even is physiotherapy? We think of it as all of the other therapies that we do, outside of adjusting. These include:
Soft Tissue Work: This is essentially where we work the muscles/tendons/ligaments, either with our hands or tools. We utilize a few different techniques to assist us with this:
- Pin and Stretch Techniques: This is where we pin the muscle down in different areas, while stretching the muscle to full length. This helps the muscle stretch in all direction. This is great for your piriformis muscle, trapezius muscle, and neck muscles.
- Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization: AKA Graston. We take a metal tool to help 'scrape' the skin, creating a healthy inflammatory response. This helps bring blood flow to the area, which helps bring healing nutrients.
- Massage: We love using things like Sombra or Biofreeze to help increase the blood flow to the area
Stretches - It is rare to ever leave our office without some stretches to help get you better on your own. We love stretches, and as a professional, we pride ourselves in finding your areas of concern, and finding simple and easy stretches to do throughout the day to target these areas.
Exercises - Exercises are such an amazing way to heal. It is not common to find different imbalances in the musculoskeletal system, and we love finding exercise that can help your body heal
Other Therapies include: Electrical Stimulation, Ultrasound, and Heat. These help reduce pain levels, improve motion, and get you feeling better.
At Woodland Chiropractic, we utilize this hands on approach. Expect to get adjusted, but also expect some other therapies during your visit that help areas outside of your joints.
